Can you insulate an attic that still has knob and tube wiring?

The call usually starts with insulation, not wiring. A homeowner in Elkton or North East books an energy audit, or lines up an attic insulation rebate through Delmarva Power, and the crew climbs into the attic with a flashlight. Two minutes later they climb back down. There is knob and tube wiring strung across the joists, and they will not blow a single bale of cellulose over it. The rebate paperwork goes back in the truck, the attic stays uninsulated, and the homeowner is left holding a wiring question nobody warned them about.

We get a version of this call every few weeks, and it picks up every fall, because the housing and the weather in this county line up badly. The older blocks of Elkton, Chesapeake City, Port Deposit, and Perryville are full of pre-1950 houses with original wiring still in the attic, and those same houses are the coldest ones in the county come January. So here is the straight answer to the question, and the order of work that gets you a warm house without wasting money.

The short answer is no, and it is not the crew being difficult

The National Electrical Code, which Maryland adopts, flatly prohibits burying knob and tube wiring in loose, rolled, or foamed insulation. The relevant section is 394.12(5), and it exists for a physical reason. Knob and tube was designed to run in open air. The porcelain knobs hold the copper away from the wood exactly so that heat from the wire can escape into the room air around it. Pack cellulose or fiberglass around those conductors and the heat has nowhere to go. The wire runs hotter, and the cloth and rubber insulation on it, already brittle after a century, breaks down faster. Buried wiring is also invisible wiring, so the next electrician, or the next fire investigator, cannot see what condition it is in.

An insulation contractor who covers live knob and tube is taking on liability no sensible company wants, which is why reputable crews walk away on sight. The rebate programs make it explicit too: attics have to be free of active knob and tube before the insulation work qualifies. None of this is anyone being fussy. It is the one rule in old house work that everybody actually agrees on.

Why “just insulate around it” does not work

The workaround people ask about is leaving air channels around the wiring and insulating the rest. In a real attic this falls apart fast. Knob and tube does not run in a tidy line along one wall. It snakes across the whole floor, hops joists, and dives into wall cavities, because it was strung to reach every ceiling fixture below. Keeping honest clearance around all of it means leaving bare stripes across the entire attic floor, and an attic insulated in stripes leaks heat almost as badly as one with no insulation at all. You would pay most of the price of the job for a fraction of the benefit, and the next home inspector will still write the wiring up.

First find out whether that wiring is even live

Here is the part that surprises people: a lot of the knob and tube visible in Cecil County attics is dead. These houses have been touched by electricians for a hundred years, and earlier owners often paid for partial rewires that abandoned the old runs in place rather than pulling them out. The wires are still stapled across your joists, but nothing flows through them.

If it is live, what fixing it costs

Attic circuits are usually the friendly end of rewiring work because the access is right there. No fishing through finished walls, no plaster surgery, just new grounded cable run where the old runs were. Replacing individual live circuits typically lands between $600 and $1,800 per circuit, and a whole attic is often two or three circuits. The order of work that saves money before winter

  1. Trace first. Know what is live before anyone quotes anything, including us.
  2. Replace or retire the attic runs. Permitted, inspected, documented. The inspection record is what the rebate program and your insurer both want to see.
  3. Then insulate. The rebate money covers insulation, not wiring, so sequence the wiring in late summer or early fall and the insulation lands before heating season.

Homeowners who do it in the other order pay twice. Insulation blown over wiring that later has to be replaced gets raked back out and topped up again, and some crews charge nearly full price for the return trip. A house in Elkton or anywhere else in the county that starts tracing in August has comfortable room to be rewired, inspected, insulated, and warm by Thanksgiving.
